Baidoa, 21 September 2026: The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the South West State of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Mahad Mohamed Sheikh Hassan, and the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Adan Hassan Mohamed, held a meeting at the Office of the Speaker with the Chairperson of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the South West State, and members of the South West State El Niño Committee.
The meeting focused on the El Niño situation, its potential impact on communities, the level of preparedness of government institutions, and measures to reduce risks arising from heavy rainfall and other emergency conditions. Participants also exchanged updates and information on the current situation.
Particular attention was given to strengthening public awareness of El Niño-related risks, safety measures, and the importance of ensuring that timely warnings and accurate information reach communities on a continuous basis.
The meeting also underscored the importance of close coordination among the relevant institutions in order to strengthen preparedness and minimise the impact of potential emergencies.
